Changing of the guard for Nuclear Technology journal

August 10, 2023, 7:02AMANS News

Immediate past president Steven Arndt announced at the ANS Annual Meeting that Yassin Hassan, Distinguished Professor, Regents Professor, and the L. F. Peterson ’36 Chair II in Engineering at Texas A&M University, will be the next technical editor of ANS’s Nuclear Technology journal.

Following the 2022 Annual Meeting, ANS past president Andrew Klein (2016–2017), professor emeritus of nuclear science and engineering at Oregon State University and the current editor of NT, announced that he would retire at the end of his term in June 2023. That started the clock for ANS’s Technical Journals Committee to begin the search for a new technical editor. After numerous virtual meetings and interviews, the committee, chaired by ANS members Robert Little and Elia Merzari, recommended Hassan to Arndt per the ANS bylaws.

The Society’s vision of the future of scholarly publishing

Like many researchers, I long ago recognized the significance of debates about open access (OA) publishing. However, I did not become too deeply involved, knowing that I alone could not directly influence any outcomes.

Recently, two things changed

The first was the memo from the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP)—commonly referred to as the Nelson memo—issued in August last year. In it, grant recipients are guided to provide immediate public access to research papers and data resulting from federally funded research. The second was my election as president of the American Nuclear Society. During my term from June 16, 2022, through June 15, 2023, I faced very concrete decisions that led to the recent launch of ANS's latest publishing venture, Nuclear Science and Technology Open Research (NSTOR).

ANS commits to open research publishing

September 13, 2022, 12:02PMANS News

After more than a year of discussion and planning, American Nuclear Society Executive Director/CEO Craig Piercy recently signed an agreement with open research (OR) publisher F1000 (a subsidiary of Taylor & Francis) to create a new publishing platform that adopts F1000’s innovative open research methodology and technology. A generous, sustaining donation from ANS member Sushil C. Jain, P.E., will allow ANS to bring this plan from idea to reality. All content published on the new ANS F1000 platform will be free and open to the public. Both organizations are excited to begin this critical step forward, bringing ANS scholarly publications into the future.

Nuclear Technology searches for a new technical editor

August 8, 2022, 3:00PMANS News

At the recent ANS Annual Meeting, Andrew Klein, past ANS president (2016–2017), professor emeritus of nuclear science and engineering at Oregon State University, and the current editor of ANS’s journal Nuclear Technology, announced his retirement at the end of his term in June 2023. ANS is looking for qualified members who are interested in becoming the next technical editor of the journal. The selected person will be appointed “editor-designate” and will work with Dr. Klein for a period of time before taking over the full editor’s role.

Klein, professor emeritus at Oregon State University and past ANS president, took over the duties of technical editor in 2015, a few years before his term as ANS president. During his tenure as editor, Dr. Klein has raised NT ’s reputation for technical excellence and arranged a schedule of twelve issues annually covering the most important topics in nuclear technology.
